How the Graphics Industry has Evolved
Over the years the graphics industry has evolved immensely from new innovations and breakthroughs. New advancements have shifted the industry into a powerful tool for aiding the consumer market. From new advancements including 3D printers to inventions like even tablets has had a major impact on how consumers view the graphics industry, and how the industry portrays itself.
Most people in the advertising industry have come to the conclusion that using the internet and social media is more effective than using direct marketing. Some examples of direct marketing include magazines, TV, outdoors, etc. Digital marketing is the way of the future vs direct marketing and is expected to grow over the next few years and many more to come. The way of the world is heading towards the digital media way of life. Digital media has forever changed the world of the graphics industry.
Over the years the ways of communicating with a specific target market have changed drastically. The first people to claim the idea of paper happen to be the chinese in 105AD, which is a basis of the graphics industry. For starters in the year 1276, Printing arrives in Europe with a paper mill in Fabriano, Italy. In 1450, Johann Gensfleisch Gutenberg is cited as the one who was given credit with the idea of perfecting the system for printing type in books. In years to come in 1460, Albrecht Pfister becomes the first to add illustrations to a book. In 1470, Nicolas Jenson, considered one of history’s greatest typeface designers, sets news standard for the Roman type. In years to follow in the year 1530, Claude Garamond opens the first type foundry, developing and selling fonts to printers. In 1722, The first Caslon Old Style font is developed. It would later be used for the printing of the Declaration of Independence. In 1760, The Industrial Revolution begins and sets the stage for advances in graphic design production.
The 1800’s have a lot of innovations some include in the year 1816, the first sans-serif font makes a subtle entrance as one line of a book. In 1861, Williams Morris, who became a highly influential figure in design history, sets up his art decorating firm. He was a major player in the British Arts and Crafts Movement. In 1869, N.W. Ayer & Son is founded. Considered the first advertising agency, they pioneered the open contract and utilized fine art in design. In 1880, The development of halftone screen allows for the first photo to be printed with a full range of tones. In 1890, The Art Nouveau movement begins and it changes design forever. It made its way into all types of commercial design and utilized all types of arts. The style continued through 1920.
In the modern years lots of more inventions and ideas came to life. For starters in 1900, the Futurism style of design emerges. Influenced by cubism and technology, it dropped all the traditional features and concentrated on clean, sharp, straight lines. It was popular through the 1930s. In 1910, A style called Early Modern developed. It uses photos rather than illustrations and a minimalistic, geometric design sense.
In the 21st century, Grunge design emerged along with the punk rock scene as more designs used texture to portray a dirty feeling. This style remained popular through the 2010s. In 2010, What became known as the Flat style plays off the minimalist feel with sharp lines and surprising twists like the excessive use of negative space. In 2016, Abstract Swiss continues the minimalist trend, distorting and deconstructing design in ways that seem random. This year cinemagraphs discovered the idea of photographs where one small movement is made to capture the viewer's' attention in the clutter of on-screen marketing. All of these new inventions help to create more ideas for the industry to incorporate into their daily uses.
A question that remains if technology has had a positive impact or a negative impact on the graphics industry. Most say the the new innovations of technology have enhanced the graphics industry in a positive way. With the new discoveries happening daily, it becomes a vital part of the graphics industry to incorporate the new inventions into new ideas for the industry. The industry would not be the same without the technology advancements that are discovered.
The graphics industry changes every day with new inventions, as well as new ideas that help the ideas of people who work in the industry. The industry will always be in constant change due to the new developments created daily. The people who have created these innovations have forever changed the industry even if their intentions were extremely small. The graphics industry is an incredibly large industry with many employees and revenue. Many individuals work hard everyday to improve the success of the industry, as well as help evolve the industry for the better. The industry will be forever changed by the new developments of many new innovators who are currently working hard to make strides in the graphics community.
